Thousands of fines handed out for fly-tipping

flytipping

11:49am 12th October 2017
(Updated 5:41am 13th October 2017)

Councils countrywide have handed out thousands of fixed penalty notices for fly-tipping - in the first year since they were given new powers.

In total, across England, on-the-spot fines have been issued 4600 times - amounting to more than £750,000 from people illegally dumping rubbish in the year to May.

Of these, local authorities in Surrey issued 21 fixed penalty notices - worth £4350.

North East Hampshire councils gave out three - totalling £200.

The fines ranged from 150 to 400 pounds each.

The Local Government Association's environment spokesman is Martin Tett: "What it shows is that local councils recognise that one of the biggest blights that local residents get upset about is flytipping.

"It's dirty, it's dangerous, and it just pollutes the environment.

"We want to make sure that councils across the country have a zero tolerance policy towards flytipping, and make sure that people realise it doesn't pay to fly tip."
