Controversial Newlands Corner development scrapped

Newlands Corner

2:49pm 7th September 2017
(Updated 3:14pm 7th September 2017)

Controversial plans for a development at a Surrey beauty spot - have been scrapped.

The County Council had wanted to build a play trail and other facilities at Newlands Corner.

There were hundreds of objections and the Planning Inspectorate has now ordered a public inquiry.

Mike Goodmann from Surrey County Council says that has made them rethink the whole thing: "As the Planning Inspectorate has now told us a public inquiry into the educational play trail is needed, we have decided not to pursue this proposal at the moment.

"While we fully intend to revisit our plans for the trail at a later date because of its recreational, health and learning benefits, we are not prepared to spend around £30,000 of taxpayers' money on an inquiry at a time when our budgets are under such severe pressure from the rising need for the likes of children's services and adult social care."

The Save Newlands Corner group lead the campaign against the plans.

Before the latest decision was announced, it said: "The overarching issue is that these proposals would  change Newlands Corner from a place in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that people love to visit for it's natural, uncommercialised environment, into a 'visitor attraction'.

"The current arrangements at Newlands Corner have created a balance and harmony between what people  want  and  what  nature  needs.

"These  play  structures  would  punch  a  hole  through  those arrangements."
