Under threat Aldershot 'hub of the community' given lifeline

A historic Aldershot 'hub of the community' under threat of closing has just been given a lifeline.

64 pubs have already closed in the town and the Royal Staff was in danger of joining them with the owners, Fullers, wanting to sell up.

Since this was announced, local campaign group Save Our Staff was formed in an attempt to keep the Staff's historic doors open.

So far over 350 people have liked the page on Facebook and more than 200 have signed a petition in support of CAMRA’s Asset of Community Value application to keep the pub open.

However after months of worry, Rushmoor Borough Council has now given the Staff Asset of Community Value status.

This now means:

  • It prevents any current or future owners from changing the use of the property without going through the full planning process during which the council will need to be persuaded that the property is no longer an asset to the community.
  • If the property is put up for sale, then the local community is given six months to raise the money and purchase it before it goes on general sale.

Secretary for Save Our Staff, Simon Harper told Eagle: "There's been a social media explosion of likes and congratulations and positive comments from all over the town, not just the local area.

"A number of people have been using the pub for many years, it is very much the hub of our community.

"It's quite similar to a soap opera pub I suppose as we're such a close community.

"From the point of view of the regulars I think there's going to be a very big party this weekend to celebrate it."
