Surrey and Hampshire parents not spending enough time with kids

baby bath

6:01am 21st April 2017

Over one fifth of parents in Surrey and Hampshire are spending less than an hour a day with their children.

That's down 10% on the national figure, according to new research by Tots to Travel.

The problem is being blamed on too much time spent on social media, and busy commutes for some parents.

But spending time with young children has been proven to be crucial to their development, both socially and emotionally.

The survey, commissioned by Tots to Travel, has shown that almost 3 in 10 parents across the UK, with children under 5 years, are only able to spend less than one hour of quality time with their children.

Now a new survey has revealed the barriers parents face when it comes to ensuring quality time is spent with their kids.

Wendy Shand helped conduct the research and says small moments makes a big difference: "It's about saying, do I lose myself in Facebook for 25 minutes or is there a book I can pick up and have a little story time?

"Is there a little discussion about how pre-school was today? Those little snatched moments of time which could so earily disappear when children are in front of the TV, or you're absorbed in work emails.

"We're not talking about devoting hours and hours of quality family time, because it doesn't come if you force it.

"But I think meal times are really important, bath times are really important."

"This isn't to say lets get rid of work, or working parents should be put down in any respect at all.

"It's just about saying the time that you do have available with your children, whether your working or not is very slim, and how do we use that time to the best effect."
