Chertsey dementia patient has wish granted through steel drum band

Patsy Houghton

6:04am 16th March 2017
(Updated 4:22pm 16th March 2017)

Making the dreams come true of a dementia sufferer in Chertsey..

That is what happened on Wednesday (March 15) at the Orchard Dementia Centre.

Vic Houghton asked for a steel drum band to come and play for her mum, Patsy, who is 68 years old.

Patsy spends much of her time at The Orchard Dementia Centre, Eagle Radio's Charity of the Year.

Her condition is getting worse week on week, but seeing a steel drum band is one thing that really would brighten up her day.

We spent a morning last month at The Orchard Dementia Centre to meet both Vic and Patsy.

Vic told Eagle: "Mum really loves the steel bands, to the point where she uses spoons and claps them around.

"She enjoys fun, happy music, I think it reminds her of her childhood.

"I would love to find a steel band out there that would be willing to come and play, I'm sure mum would give it a go too if given the opportunity!

"Music is the only thing that's keeping her going right now.

"There aren't many good days with alzheimer's, this would be a good day for her.

"To see her happy, it would make the hard work of the last few years worth it."

Well, those dreams came true on Wednesday - thanks to a steel drum band from the Brighton Hill Community School in Basingstoke.

Vic was delighted: "She was happy and if this is the last nice thing that we can do for mum. Tears came to my eyes during that.

"I've already sent it to my brother and sister."

"They were amazing. I can't believe that they came all that way, from Basingstoke to Chertsey.

"I wouldn't have wanted to do that journey and the enthusiasm, they were smiling, and they seemed to enjoy it."
