Police helicopter joins search for missing Surrey University student

8:02pm 1st March 2017
(Updated 1:18pm 2nd March 2017)

Surrey Police have called in a police helicopter as the belongings of a missing Surrey University student are found.

Viktor Ivanelo has not been since he left a friend’s house in Esher around 2am on Sunday (26 February).

A police helicopter, a drone, and search and rescue dogs have now joined police and specialist search officers in the hunt for the 21-year-old.

They tell us a number of Viktor’s belongings, including a bag, mobile phone, keys and headphones, were found at the side of a bridleway in Woodstock Lane South by a horse rider around 11.40am on Sunday.

They are also focusing on the Esher and Claygate areas.

Some 30 volunteers from Surrey Search and Rescue, along with their dogs and drone capability have been tirelessly trying to find the student.

Residents in these areas are also being urged to check any sheds, garages or outbuildings in case Viktor has taken shelter.

Viktor has university lodgings in Guildford although his permanent address is in South West London.

He has not been seen at either address since he went missing.

He was wearing a grey formal jacket, blue jeans and smart shoes, and was carrying a black over the shoulder bag which may have had a laptop inside when he was last seen. He was not wearing his glasses when he left the address in Esher.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Rymarz, from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, who is overseeing the investigation, said: “We are keeping an open mind at this stage but it is completely out of character for Viktor not to have made contact with anyone for this amount of time and we are extremely concerned for his welfare.

“We have no reason to believe that Viktor poses any risk to the public – all I am asking residents in the areas listed above to do is check any outbuildings or sheds in case he has taken refuge there.

DCI Rymarz continued: “The discovery of some of his personal belongings is of particular concern, given that they were found some distance from where he was last seen and we are focusing our searches on this area.

"We are also concerned that there has not been a single sighting of him or that he has not made any contact with family or friends since he went missing.

“Anyone with any information as to his whereabouts is asked to come forward as a matter of urgency.

"We are carrying out a number of enquiries but any other information or sightings, no matter how insignificant they might seem, would help us enormously.”
