Ways to beat Blue Monday in Surrey and Hampshire

6:03am 16th January 2017

It is officially the most depressing day of the year - Blue Monday, January 16, 2017.

But we are not having any of it.

Psychologist, Cliff Arnall, calculated the saddest day of the year using variables such as lack of holidays, debts and our usually failed attempts at new year resolutions…

He says happiness can be calculated:

[W + (D-d)] X Tq

M x Na

W = weather       D = debt     d = salary       M = low motivation     Na = feeling you need a change

T = time since Christmas     Q= the length of time you've been breaking your New Year resolutions

So have those variables had an impact on how you're feeling today?

We want to beat Blue Monday.

Here are a few reasons and ways to be happy in Surrey and Hampshire today - and every day!

1. We have beautiful sunrises and sunsets

Just take a look at this video by Dan Bowles of Pewley Down.

The January sunrise is enough to put a smile on anyone's face.

2. Opportunities to get outdoors

A bit of light exercise is a great way to boost the immune system and release endorphins.

There are plenty of spots to get the legs going in our area - many reward you with fantastic views.

Take Lightwater Country Park for example - a protected Site of Special Scientific Interest.

It covers a vast 59 hectares and consists of open heathland, woodland, meadows and ponds.

There are marked walks and nature trails, and the view from High Curley hill is well worth the climb.

You can enjoy a dog-free picnic area and children’s playground -  and if you walk up to the viewpoint you will be rewarded with views looking across to Guildford, Ascot and Canary Wharf.

There are more recommended walking spots and other great days out here.

3. Get an early night and early start

British Cycling coach Andy Pink is from Guildford - he knows how a bit of healthy living can turn a frown upside down.

He says: "Getting a good sleep really is key, 8 hours is the recommended amount.

"Although it might not be easy getting up early on those cold, dark winter mornings, once you're up most people are far more productive in the morning so make the most of that.

"The earlier you go to bed in the evening, the easier it'll be to get up in the morning so give it a try!

"You'll be surprised at how much you can get done before your working day starts."

His healthy living tips can be put in to practice every day, not just on Blue Monday.

4. Eat well

It is another top tip to turn around any day of the week.

Pippa Mitchell is a nutritional therapist from Godalming.

She says eating well can really change your mood - but don't try too hard: "Don't put in some incredibly strict diet plan if you know that actually it's totally unrealistic, it's not going to fit in with your lifestyle.

"You know, you're going to do it for a week or so and then feel utterly miserable and the whole thing falls apart.

"Take one of two things that you know you could do easily."

Still stuck for recipe ideas?

Here are some to get you started:

5. Find your hygge

Hygge - or if you weren't sure, HOOG-uh to rhyme with sugar.

It is a danish concept that means cosiness - and then some.

It's more than just a bliss moment.

It's fluffy socks and woolly throws by a roaring fire while snow settles on the cottage window.

It's hot dogs and hot chocolate while wearing mittens and bobble hats watching fireworks.

Hygge is whatever gives you that Hygge feeling.

Finding your Hygge moment today could be just want you need to cheer yourself up.

If you are still feeling blue there is something to be optimistic about...

Too late Cliff, you've created it now!
