More than a thousand objections to parking meters at Newlands Corner

Newlands-corner-web

(Updated 2:27pm 28th October 2016)

There is a renewed call to put a stop to a controversial development at Newlands Corner in Guildford.

It is after just under 1,400 objections to consent for parking meters were received by the Planning Inspectorate.

It is part of plans by Surrey County Council to add a play trail, a visitor's centre, a shop and a cafe to the beauty spot.

An Inspectorate spokesperson has told Eagle it is unusual to get that many representations for an application under Section 38 of the Commons Act 2006.

Sally Blake from the Save Newlands Corner Campaign Group says she is "delighted at the scale of the objections."

She tells us it is because they are concerned the application heralds the start of Surrey County Council's plans for the area: "The parking machines will mean, firstly, that they will spoil the look of the site.

"They'll mean that it's not affordable to everyone.

"And the money from the parking machines will be used to further develop the site - in a way that people don't want."

She said they do not want the area spoiled by a visitor attraction people have to pay for: "Just the parking machines by themselves will change the look and the character and the affordability.

"In my view, and in an awful lot of other people's views, it should stay the same - everyone can (currently) afford to go there."

Surrey County Council said: "This is about confirming the changes that are part of our plans to improve facilities and provide a better experience for all while also contributing to our ultimate aim of ensuring countryside sites become self-sufficient due to huge strain on our budgets from rising demand for services, especially adult social care, and we expect a decision within a month or two."
