Warning over potential bogus cancer cure in Surrey

Concerns are being raised about a liquid which claims to cure cancer.

Surrey Trading Standards believe a banned substance could be promoted at an event in Farnham this weekend.

'Miracle Mineral Solution' (MMS) claims to cure illnesses like cancer and malaria.

It has also been promoted to parents of children with autism.

Officers say MMS contains bleach-like chemicals, which should not be consumed.

Emma Dalmayne has six children on the autistic spectrum.

She believes those who use or sell MMS should be prosecuted: "I want Parliament to pass legislation stating that if you're caught using this stuff on your child or any sort of treatment that's unscientifically proven that you're arrested and prosecuted.

"This is child abuse, you can't do anything less about this.

"I'm disgusted and horrified anyone would want to do this to their child.

"I understand parents get desperate but once you see something top out of your child that looks like bowel lining, you would think that the people would stop, but they're encouraged to carry on."

Trading standards officers say children are more vulnerable than adults to the ill-effects of the products and consumption by them is particularly dangerous.

Michael Marshall, from charity Good Thinking Society, which challenges pseudoscience, is worried: "People who are very, very vulnerable who might be suffering from a serious illness and might be looking for answers.

"There might not be many options available to them.

"So, they are turning to this very dangerous substance which can't help them in any way."

Michael tells us about the symptoms people show when they consume MMS: "There are people who are reporting that they find it very, very hard to swallow.

"Their throats are dry for a long time, then they start to vomit, and even vomit blood at times.

"There are quite severe things, there's no benefit to this."

The organisers of the Farnham event, Genesis II Church, tell us they are simply holding a church service and won't be selling MMS.

Adding that journalists are not welcome to go along.

What is MMS?

  • MMS, also known as Miracle Mineral Supplement, is sold as an oral supplement.
  • MMS is a 28% sodium chlorite solution, which is equivalent to industrial-strength bleach.
  • When taken as directed it could cause severe nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, potentially leading to dehydration and reduced blood pressure.
  • If the solution is diluted less than instructed, it could cause damage to the gut and red blood cells, potentially resulting in respiratory failure.

Richard Walsh, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Localities and Community Wellbeing, said: "This so-called “miracle mineral solution” appears to target vulnerable people and those suffering serious illnesses who are asked to pay large sums of money for a product which not only doesn’t work but could be dangerous.

"We are determined to protect consumers from misleading claims and deceptive practices and would urge anyone with information about the sale of these products to come forward."

A spokesman for Surrey Police said officers would be monitoring the situation this weekend.
