Top questions about the General Election

1. What is the General Election?

It is when the general public decides who should run the country.

You will be voting for a Member of Parliament from a particular political party to represent your area in the House of Commons.

There are 650 areas, called constituencies.

The political party with the most MPs gets to run the country.

2. When was the last General Election?

Thursday, 7 May 2015.

David Cameron (Conservatives) won, Ed Miliband (Labour) didn't.

the next was due for 2020.

3. Why are we having one now?

Because the prime minister called one when it wasn't due.

We call this a Snap General Election.

In this case, the UK wasn't due an election until May 2020 - usually held every five years on the first Thursday in May.

In this case 522 MPs voted in favour of an early election - so there will be one.

4. Why did Theresa May call one?

So she can get stuff she wants to get done, done. Mainly Brexit.

That is what she said when she announced the Snap General Election.

She said she needs unity in the House of Commons.

5. But she may not win?

True. Her party may not win enough seats - it is a risk.
