SCIENCE ON OUR DOORSTEP
The Institute For Animal Health, Pirbright.
Have you ever driven past the Institute for Animal Health (IAH) in Pirbright and wondered what on earth is going on in there?
Well wonder no more. Eagle Radio’s been given special access to the site and all this week we’ll be revealing more about what goes on beyond the fence.
What is the Institute for Animal Health?
-
It’s a national centre that looks at infectious diseases in animals
-
It’s a world leader for research into viruses of farm animals
-
Scientists and researchers work on many viruses, including Foot and Mouth, and Bird Flu
Who benefits from their work?
-
We all do! The IAH’s work ensures future food security
-
Farmers – it helps to develop better control of viral diseases of livestock and poultry
-
Policy makers – it’s work feeds into decisions on the most effective approaches to prevent and control outbreaks of diseases
What next for the IAH?
-
Over £200 million has been committed to the redevelopment of the site in Pirbright by the Government and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council
-
A state-of-the-art high biosecurity lab is due to be completed in 2014
-
A second phase of development, aiding the IAH’s work on diseases in poultry and other animals, is due for completion in 2016
-
It’s hoped the significant investment will create a number of highly-skilled jobs
Every day this week we’ll be interviewing the key players in the areas listed below – so keep checking back for the latest instalment.
