How the Olympics will affect Surrey and Hampshire
Although the 2012 Games are being held in London, both Surrey and Hampshire are already seeing the impact of having the Olympics on their doorstep.
As well as two cycle races passing through Surrey, both our counties will see an affect on tourism, business, policing and transport.
At Eagle Radio we are looking at the impact the Games will have on our area.
Keep checking back for updates.
The Olympic Torch Relay
We now have more details about the route the Olympic torch will take when it passes through our area.
Organisers have released a street-by-street guide to the route.
After passing through Egham and Felbridge on the 10th and 17th of July, the big date for us is July 20th.
The first town to get the Olympic torch that day is Godstone.
It will travel along the High Street, before making its way to Bletchingley.
After going along Castle Street, it moves into Redstone Hill in Redhill.
Reigate is next, where the relay ends on West Street.
It continues its journey in Dorking and on to Shere.
Then it is Godalming and finally along London Road and the High Street in Guildford.
On the evening of July 20th there will be a big celebration event at Stoke Park.
You can see the street-by-street guide to the Olympic torch route by visiting the London 2012 website.
Speaking when it was announced that the Olympic torch would pass through Guildford, Eagle Radio's Peter Gordon gave his reaction:
Olympic Athletes Staying in Surrey
We have got the cycle race and the torch is passing through, but that is not the limit of Surrey's involvement with the Olympic Games.
Many teams will be using the county as their base ahead of the event.
Anthony Zahra has been to have a look at one - the Surrey Sports Park:
Policing the Olympics
Surrey Police has outlined its plans for the Games.
Here is what is planned and how the force intends to cope with the challenges.
What needs policing?
- The Athletes Village at the Royal Holloway University of London
- The Road Cycle Race
- The Cycle Time Trial
- Training venues
- The Torch Relay
- Other events, many related to the Cultural Olympiad
- The main events in London - Surrey will provide officers to help the Metropolitan Police during the Games
- The Olympic Route Network - roads used by athletes and officials to get to and from the Games in London
- The Olympic Cycle Race Test Event
Speaking to Eagle to mark one year before the start of the Games, Surrey Police Superintendant Jerry Westerman explained what the force will be doing:
Check back soon for a more in-depth look at what the police and other agencies in both our areas are doing in the build-up to and during the London Olympics.
Olympic Torch Bearers
The names of the people who will carry the Olympic torch through our area have been revealed.
The torch comes to us on July 10th, 17th and 20th.
Click on the town you want to see to find out who will be carrying the torch there.
And from everyone at Eagle Radio, congratulations to our torch bearers.
