Aldershot Troops in Kenya
| Eagle Radio has been given special access to Aldershot’s 1st Battalion Welsh Guards in Kenya. The troops have been sent there as part of pre-deployment training. The Welsh Guards were in Afghanistan in 2009 and there is a good chance they will be re-deployed next spring. 650 troops, including 100 new recruits and even a former Falklands officer, have been deployed to Kenya. They are having to cope with intense heat and bush conditions as part of the six-week Operation Askari Thunder mission. Over the next week, our reporter Des Busteed will be travelling to a number of base camps outside Nairobi to see how they are coping. | ![]() |

The Final Mission
The Welsh Guards, along with Des, face gruelling temperatures of 50 degrees-plus as they prepare for the latest phase of pre-deployment training in Kenya.
The troops are moving north to Archers Post or "roast" as it's being dubbed as part of the Askari Centurion phase of the six-week exercise.
A handful of soldiers have already been struck down with heat stroke.
RAF Puma helicopters are used to support and transport them throughout.
Here Des posts his final report:
