WATCH: Can you imagine life in Guildford's air raid shelter

guildford 1

5:25pm 11th January 2017
(Updated 11:11pm 11th January 2017)

What might it have been like to live in Guildford during the World War Two bombings?

Can you imagine hearing that terrifying siren and fleeing to a public air raid shelter?

One film is giving us an idea of what live was like in the 1940's in the town.

IKS Explorations goes under ground in the abandoned 1941 Foxenden Quarry Deepshelter, underneath the car park on York Road.

We are told it was one of eighteen other air raid shelters and tunnels in the area, all of which varied in size and were mostly converted cellars and basements.

The dark corridors are eerie today but would once have been filled with some 1,000 people 50 feet down.

It housed a first aid post, three toilet blocks, two air vents and exit shafts, and a shelter marshall's office.

There was also a bay set aside for the children of Sandfield School.

If you were left lying low int he shelter during a bombing, you would have had electricity, running water and lighting.

It was left to rest from 1945 until discovered during the construction of the car park.

Can you image life underground during air raids?
